Iran - Persian Classical Music

· 0 commentaires

From the old Nonesuch Explorer series comes this album of classical Persian music, originally released in 1974 and re-released on CD in 1991. The album contains a number of nice virtuoso performances on the various instruments of the Persian classical repertoire. The ensemble leader Faramarz Payvar provides some outstanding work on the santur in most of the dastgah performances. Also, the zarb player Mohammad Esmai'li performs an amazing solo on his drum, nearly incorporating melody into the work with a single percussion instrument. The tar playing also stands out exceptionally in "Dastgah Chahargah," as Houshang Zarif pumps out an outstanding run on his lute. For a basic overview of Persian classical, this album does a pretty good job of showing off the major instruments and vocals, all with the dastgah framework. At the same time, it's mildly simplistic, as are many of the Explorer series albums. For a newcomer to Persian music, this wouldn't be a bad place to start for a basic overview, though those better acquainted with the basics might prefer a slightly more comprehensive compilation, such as Rounder's Iran installment of the Anthology of World Music. Review by Adam Greenberg - All Music Guide.

Hamid Khezri - Le dotar du Khorassan

Tuesday, June 2, 2009 · 0 commentaires

Hamid Khezri, dotar player and singer, is renowned as a versatile musician equally at home in a wide range of musical styles ranging from the folk music of his North Khorassan home, the Sufi music of the South Khorassan deserts and the troubadour traditions of the mountains of North Khorassan to original compositions and a variety of cross-over projects. Whether as a soloist or as a member of various ensemble, he always excels by his virtuosity, high musicality, strong and varied rhythms and moving melodies. Hamid Khezri was born in 1969 in Quchan, the musical centre of North Khorassan Persia. He learned to play the dotar, the most important instrument of the region, and went to study with the great masters of that two-stringed long-necked lute, such as Haji Hossein Yeganeh, Golafruz and Hamrah Bakhshi. Engaging in music-ethnological research, he became familiar with the various traditions and playing techniques not only from the north but also from the south of the province. Owing to his deep knowledge of the music and firmly rooted in tradition, Hamid Khezri was able to develop a playing technique of his own. He thus created his own highly unique style of playing the dotar. Hamid Khezri has toured the US, Canada and Europe together with prominent artists. He currently lives in Germany.

The Music of Islam, Vol. 14: Mystic Music Through the Ages

· 0 commentaires

From the surprisingly good and comprehensive series of Islamic music on Celestial Harmonies comes this volume, dealing with mystic musics of Islam, primarily that of the Sufis, and moreover that of Turkey to a large extent. The performers are the Galata Mevlevi house, led by Nail Kesova, also available on volume nine of the series (Whirling Dervishes). The playing is impeccable, with a trio of ney players providing the breathy sound that is so necessary for a good bit of Sufi music. The vocals are also perfectly in place, with an outstanding performance by Kesova. Songs are largely works of poetry, with three from the great Rumi, and a number from other mystics through the ages (as the title would suggest). For a nice look through all aspects of Islamic music, this series is probably the way to go. For a simple look into the Sufist traditions, this album fits right in competition with a number of other ones, but the quality of music here might give it a bit of an edge. ~ Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide.

This collection of Sufi music is superb; as the liner notes explain, Turkish music reflects the history of its relationship with Central Asia, and also the influence of Persian classical form with its elegance and purity, a combination which perhaps to the Western ear might sound extremely foreign. I find this fourteenth CD of the magnificent "Music of Islam" series to be soul-stirring and uplifting. If you enjoy this type of music, it is an ideal recording to minimize the din and sensory overload of the 21st century world. These mystic Sufi hymns are sung with much beauty and piety, and with the backing of classical art music instruments, which are: The nay (oblique flute), with its whispery sound, the tanbur (a long-necked lute), the qanun (a type of zither), the kamanche (fiddle), and kundum (drums). Some of the songs use the poetry of the great Rumi, and others chant the holy names of God; of my very favorites, track 8 is a liturgical piece by Rumi used to begin religious celebrations, and the final track is a recitation that is a fitting ending for this exquisite CD. To quote the liner notes: "The concluding prayer is chanted in a way that blurs the distinction between speech and song", and it is from the Qur'an: "East or West, it all belongs to God; wherever you turn God is there". The musicians are from the Galata Mevlevi Music and Sema Ensemble who are based in Turkey, where this recording was made. The presentation on all 16 CDs (including the sampler) of this Celestial Harmonies series is exceptional. This one has a 11 page booklet with extensive history, detailed explanation of each musical piece, recording info, and more. Total time is 63'56.

The Music of Islam, Vol. 13: Music of Pakistan

· 0 commentaires

With the exquisite articulation of living legend Ustad Bary Fateh Ali Khan, this volume in The Music of Islam series features the traditional instruments and ragas of the classical music of Pakistan which thrive as a living testament to the wide spectrum of cultures and practices across the World of Islam. One of the few great masters alive today, Indian born Ustad Bary Fateh Ali Khan began singing at the age of eight. After partition, his family migrated to Lahore in the new state of Pakistan. He is accompanied by sarangi, tabla, tanpuras and svarmandal, and accompanies himself on harmonium (an adapted version of the Western reed organ). The sarangi (a violin in the shape of a rectangular box) is played by one of the subcontinent's great masters, Ustad Nazim Ali Khan. The tabla (a set of two drums) is played by Ershad Hussain. Today it is the most important percussion instrument in the northern half of the subcontinent. The tanpura (a drone similar in construction to the sitar but without frets and commonly with only four strings) is played by Mustaq Ali and Ghulam Sabir. The svarmandal (a small harp similar to the autoharp but without chord bars) is played by Sultan Fateh Ali.

The Music of Islam, Vol. 12: Music of Iran

Friday, April 17, 2009 · 0 commentaires

The instrumental compositions in this recording belong to Persian art music as passed down to the present. The marked preference of the Persians for instrumental music contributed to the dedication of greater attention by the Arabs, orientated more towards vocal music, to the development of instruments and instrumental performance.

The instrumental compositions combining the kemenche and santur offer an excellent rendering of the feeling for sound or of the sound ideal of classical Persian music culture. They are accompanied in the rhythmical formation by the zarb or duff.
