Kroke: Ten Pieces To Save The World
Teodulija -Vino Istine -

Teodulija is an ethno music and dance company which assimilates traditional and contemporary Serbian music with dance. The band was formed by: IVICA STOJANOVIC and BRANKO ISAKOVIC, musicians with great experience in truly different music fields. Becoming friends through maturing, they share mutual love towards their own roots, contemporary music and God. Theodulia (originating from two words in Ancient Greek: Theos-Doulos, Service to God) represents life oriented towards God, the truth, the eternal, everlasting... “Clearly there can be no greater honor on earth for people or peoples than to serve their Creator...”“All things serve Thee” (Ps. 119:19)... THEODULIA – service to God – is purpose of our personal and family life, heights and path for Heavenly kingdom... Theodulia is the main characteristic of all Serbian rulers of the Nemanjic dynasty. “The slave of Christ God” – this is how they used to call themselves and sign documents. They were all slaves of Christ and God; they were all theodules, servants of God. Thus Sava set them all on their path, Nemanja gave them all an example, and the spirit of God strengthened them on that path. (St. Bishop Nikolai Velimirovich – “The Serbian People as a Servant of God”).

Pedro Aledo & Ensemble Méditerranéen - D'ile en ile
Pedro Aledo
The Mediterranean Ensemble launched themselves out the challenge to appear entirely on the record marks but, also and especially to exist concretly through concerts and cultural events, which aims besides the sound and musical attraction, do bear on the creation of a humanistic trend. As a matter of fact, more than a "fusion", the Mediterranean and worldwide cultural generally speaking, is a universal patrimony which deserve all the interest of the human wills, in order to soundly build the grounds for a revival of the cultural and educative values. A momentum towards the surpassing of oneself, needs some courage and efforts. Some actions untiringly repeated. By bringing together some musicians friends from different extractions, I would like to take part in the creation of trend of tolerance and joy of living shared freely.
The support and the confidence of France-Télécom allowed me to under-take this artistic step. I do quote this sponsorship with a heartfelt gratitude.
My sincere thanks, also, to Regine and J.P. Déméry (Souleiado) as to the persons that brought their help to the realization of this record.
Pedro Aledo~
1. THE WEDDING SONG
A very popular song in Algeria and in the maghrebian communities living abroad the country. This song do accompany the festivities during the marriages.
Spanish text and arrangements : P. Aledo,
Spanish song : M. Fernandez,
Text and provencal song : M. Bramerie,
Algerian song : T. Bestendji,
Violin solo : C. Zagaria.
2. DULCE MELONAR
Andalusian popular song : "I sell very mild melons, and watermelons are very coloured".
On this theme, P. Aledo built a woof, half sung, evoking the "Tanguillo", musical form from Cadix.
Spanish text : A. Fernandez, P. Aledo,
3.TLM
Music composed by P. Aledo during a recent stay at Tlemcen (Algeria).
J.C. Latil (Oboe),
T. Bestendji (Quanoun),
M. Montanaro (Flute),
H. Hamadouche (Mandolute).
4. SERENATA SICILIANA
In the origin, this song was accompanied by a jew's harp. P. Aledo disclosed oriental-andalusian feature on the melody and coloured it with a "taqsim" and some answers in the quanoun
5. FROM ISLAND TO ISLAND
Inspired from the SERENATA SICILIANA, composition of P. Aledo, by inserting in it some verses in corsican, french, catalan and spanish. The quest of the beauty : "of she", the woman, the mother, the sea, the light...
This theme gave it's title to the record Soloist, guitar and singing : P. Aledo.
6. COMO QUIERES
From the north-west of Spain, region of Sanabria, repetitive musical theme on which Equidad Bares, the Performer, has improvised and fixed this loving plaintive ballad with a musical arrangement of P. Aledo
Soloists : M. Montanaro (double flutes),
Ch. Zagaria (violin).
7. FAGGIANELLA
At the time of the practice for recording of this record, Jacques DAU made explode this "Lamentu" of the south of Corsica. Song of the mountains, which seems inspired by some "Volcanic sigh" of the corsican soul.
8. CHAOUI
Berber wedding music played by T. Bestendji in the Zurna (close to the brton bombard, both are ancestors of the oboe).
Davoul and Bendir by S. River and Hamadouche.
9. FROM CADIZ TO MARSEILLE
In the first CD of the Mediterranean Ensemble, P. Aledo had superposed an Algeria Flamenco rhythm and a corsican terzetti.
It's the meeting here, still astonishing, of the Petenera, archaic flamenco mode (dreaded by the singers, so much it was apparently loaded of "maldicion") and an Occitan song which text quite as much tinged with sadness and loneliness.
Soloists guitar : Juan Santiago and Antonio Fernandez,
Song : Felix Santiago and Miquela Bramerie.
10. GASPARD DE VILANOVA
A song from a musical under "Le siege de Mons" (Words),
Michel Montanaro (Music).
11. SEPHARABE
Contraction between two cultures since centuries neighbourhood.
Dialogue between a part of a "cantigua" sepharade and an "arabo-andalous"evocation.
Vocal : Pedro Aledo, Taoufik Bestendji.
12. YO NO SE QUE ES EL AMOR
Rumba Flamenco, far from the common spectacular screams to this musical style. The young Manuel Fernandez, his brother, his cousin and parts of the Ensemble, offer this song with vitality and moderation.
13. SEPARATION
Cenem Diyici offered this song, from the east of Turkey, to the Mediterranean Ensemble.Ballade of an evening of January the 30th 1992, coming to settle on this record, such as a present coming from the heart of voice and the soul of Cenem friendship.
Accompanied by Alain Blesing (Ac.Guitar).

Sara Lazarus with Bireli Lagrene's Gipsy Project - It's All Right With Me

Sara Lazarus is in no hurry. After the Delaware-born French emigré won first prize at the 1994 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, she waited over a decade to record her debut, 2005’s Give Me the Simple Life. To the benefit of jazz listeners, she didn’t wait long to record a followup: It’s All Right With Me finds the singer once again taking her time and making every word count, as if to imbue each syllable with the deepest possible meaning. The result is a fresh take on classic songs that avoids overindulgent flashiness.
Like her debut, which covered the well-worn theme of love, It’s All Right With Me recalls the Frank Sinatra concept albums of yesteryear. Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim (Warner Brothers, 1967) comes to mind, but instead of bossa nova, Lazarus has opted for gypsy-influenced jazz, finding ideal support in Bireli Lagrène's Gipsy Project.
Lagrène's group owes an inescapable debt to Django Reinhardt, but his mastery of Reinhardt's buoyant sound is crucial to the album's success. Lagrène, who joined Lazarus for three cuts on Give Me the Simple Life, is an impressive virtuoso guitarist who liberally embellishes his solos with arpeggiated lines, flourishes and fast runs. His chops-oriented methodology is the perfect counterpoint to Lazarus' simpler melodic approach.
This does not mean that a technical weakness accounts for Lazarus' straightforward style. "Down With Love" demonstrates that she can deliver an emotionally rich performance at a fast tempo without succumbing to superfluous scat-singing. Likewise, Lagrène's contributions are not merely decorative; for example, his solo on "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is typically ornate, but also suffused with much feeling.
The inclusion of a French ballad ("Dans Mon Ile"), along with exquisite string arrangements on three tracks, add elegance and variety to an already lovely album. At her own pace, Sara Lazarus has embarked on an impressive recording career; if she has more albums in her like It's All Right With Me, she can take all the time she needs.
IDIR - Identités
Idir restarted his career again with the release of a compilation in 1991 of seventeen songs from his first two albums "A Vava inouva" and "Ay Arrac Negh".
In 1993, a new album "les Chasseurs de lumières" (the hunters of lights) appeared on the Blue Silver label. "Les Chasseurs de lumières" is about (his) predilection, love, freedom and exile (which he had known since he moved to the Paris region in 1975). The acoustic guitar gives to the songs of this album a touch of modernism. We can also hear the voice of the Breton singer Alan Stivell in the duo "Isaltiyen". Idir restarted his career once again with "Identities" in 1999, a tribute album which joined numerous artists together including Manu Chao, Dan Ar Braz, Maxime Le Forestier, and Karen Matheson for a "A vava inouva 2". Also included were Gnawa Diffusion, Zebda, Gilles Servat, Geoffrey Oryema and the Orchestre National de Barbès.
In 2008, he had a baby with "Tout ce temps" written by Zaho. He insisted that she joins in for the release of the single as a duo.
Idir is also the author of "A tulawin", a music that has been made famous by Manu Chao's version named "Denia" (Poor Algeria), in his album Próxima Estación: Esperanza.

Trio Fado - Com que voz
The musicians of Trio Fado connect Berlin in which they live, with Portugal, their common native country. With her yearning voice Maria Carvalho literally dives into the profound songs of the Fado. António de Brito cantillates the male version of the Fado with strong and smoky temperament. Daniel Pircher, an Austrian who went to school in Portugal, generates the absolutely essential sound of the Fado on his twelve string Guitarra Portuguesa, gently flattering around the voice. With his cello arrangements the "fourth trio member” Benjamin Walbrodt gives to the Fado evening a classical quality.
The Trio Fado interprets famous Fados of different epochs with their own arrangements. In their compositions and texts the group preserves the old form of the Fados and intensifies them by the influence of the musical experiences of the musicians. The variety of the instrumentation and the lyrical appeal of the lyrics enrich the earthy, original form of the Fados.
Maria Carvalho | vocals
Maria Carvalho grew up in a village close to Porto. At that time traditional, as well as pop music was an integral part of everyday life in Portugal. Singing was a natural form of the expression of the people. To escape the pinched circumstances Maria moved to London and Paris for Au-Pair jobs and finally came to Berlin where she lives till now. Here she also gave birth to her son Lucas. With the time the longing to Portugal became stronger and stronger.
By the meeting with António de Brito, who sang Portuguese songs long since in restaurants and in parties, Maria Carvalho also found a possibility to maintain the connection with her native country. If she closes her eyes while singing, she allows the pictures of recollection to rise to the surface and let the audience take part in it with her songs.
António de Brito | vocals and guitar
António de Brito sings the male version of the Fado with strong and smoky temperament since the early 90s in the Portuguese restaurants of Berlin.
Daniel Pircher | portuguese guitar
Daniel Pircher was born in Berlin, moved to Portugal at age of ten and at the age of eleven he learned to play to the guitar. Three years later he founded his first rock band with self composed songs. In addition he played in the bass for the audio productions of his father Armin Pircher (Amor Perfeito), who devoted himself to Portuguese music. This influence led to the fact that Daniel, in spite of various rock and pop formations, formed the Portuguese group „Filhos da madrugada“ in 1996 in which he played the classical guitar.
From summer 1998 he started dealing intensely with the Mongolian music and learned the traditional overtone singing. At the same time he had a small label, produced electronic music and published various Techno sampler. In 2000 he started to play the Portuguese guitar and founded the group Fado Incorporated and later it’s successor, the Trio Fado. In the same year he also founded, as a singer and guitarist together with the cellist Benjamin Walbrodt, the group Extravagante and presents a program with multi-faceted own compositions and interpretations of pieces of José Afonso and other Portuguese composers.
In 2003 the group Terrakottonium followed, in which he uses his overtone singing and Crete stoneware sound jugs, which hang in a 4m2 big and 3 m high metal scaffolding.
Perunika Trio - Introducing

Singing beautiful and haunting acoustic harmonies, Perunika Trio's sound is rooted in the forests and plains of southern Bulgaria. With songs traditional and nostalgic, they invoke an earlier age where singing and vocal harmony were held in the greatest esteem.
The Perunika Trio formed in 2005, when three young but experienced members of the London Bulgaria Choir decided to break off and start their own venture. The group, led by the classically trained Eugenia Georgieva, shared the same Macedonian background, as well as a love for both contemporary and traditional music of their country. Their name comes from Perunika, the wife of the Slavik god of war and the bringer of rain.
The Trio remained in London to begin their recording career, but decided their first project would be an ode to Bulgaria, a modern retelling of its musical history. Bulgaria’s historical depression resulted in many musical instruments being banned there for decades, causing the music that was formed there to be mainly vocal. This proved to be a great fit for the Trio, who cited the recording as a time of discovery.
The only way to describe the vocal work on this album is absolutely gorgeous. Though the language barrier is there, the songs will haunt you with their delicate and strange harmonies. The Trio sings with a passion and skill that leaves you surprised they haven’t been singing together for a decade.
There aren’t many instruments on the album, though the two that are represent traditional Macedonian culture. There’s a tarabuka, a percussive bongo-like instrument, and a kaval, a chromatic flute. These add an air of authenticity to the album, as well as give it a boost in the “too many vocal tracks sound the same” department.
At 48 minutes, Introducing Perunika Trio is likely all the Bulgarian folk music you’ll ever need. All but one of these songs are arrangements of traditional Bulgarian songs, and the arrangements do well in highlighting the strengths of this three-piece as vocalists. The one original, “Perunika”, was written by the Trio’s Eugenia and fits right in with the rest of the material.
This album admittedly wears thin as it goes on, as there is little to contrast one song from the next, once again, due to the language barrier. Still, with its unique Easter flavor, it’s sure to be good for background noise at the very least, as its unique harmonies and music will stimulate you in many ways.
The Perunika Trio formed in October 2005. Eugenia Georgieva, Victoria Mancheva and Victoria Evstatieva met through the London Bulgaria Choir and decided to go it alone and form a trio. All are of Macedonian descent and spent their early years in the Bulgarian cities of Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Turnova. They are now based in London.
Embarking on Introducing: Perunika Trio, turned out to be a profoundly personal experience of self-discovery for these young women, as they grew up absorbing both contemporary pop and their age-old musical tradition. Eugenia Georgieva is the only one amongst them who is classically trained (she even fronted a rock band at one stage) but all have spent time in various choirs. Working on the songs for the album made them aware how deeply rooted the tradition of Bulgarian vocal harmonies was within them.
Bulgarian folk music reflects centuries of political oppression. Bulgarians were, for example, forbidden by the Ottomans to wear clothes of any other colour than black, grey and brown, and musical instruments were limited. The human voice became the instrument and the main outlet for musical expression, used as much in folk music as to glorify God in Orthodox churches.
This album is a journey through the rich musical landscape of Southern Bulgaria – laments from Strandja, melancholic chants from Rhodope, Thracian love songs, asymmetric Pirin diaphony and the clashing sounds and ‘hiccupping’ from Shopsko. Typically the time signatures are irregular and restless, giving the music a strong Eastern flavour
Introducing: Perunika Trio explores the intersecting points of Bulgarian, Macedonian and Russian folklore – Slavic nations united by ethnicity, language, the Cyrillic alphabet, old pagan beliefs and Orthodox religion. The album is a hauntingly beautiful voyage of discovery.

Medival Bbes - Undrentide
medieval songs and poetry. Their hauntingly beautiful music captures the imagination and devotion of
modern audiences. They are the Mediaeval Baebes, and in ten years they have placed
three studio albums into the top of the UK classical charts and performed before enthusiastic audiences
in the UK, United States, Canada and Europe.
The 12 brazen female musicians in Mediaeval Baebes have kept their vivacious demeanors on Undrentide, the follow-up to 1999's Worldes Blysse. Undrentide features production work from John Cale as former Miranda Sex Garden frontwoman Katherine Blake leads this British troupe into soundscapes of electronica and hums of orchestral backdrops. The Mediaeval Baebes are sophisticated in their own right here and as dynamic as always. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide
